Data stewardship extends beyond saved files to behavioral traces, inferences, metadata, inherited collections and household recordings. What is collected and retained varies by service and settings, and individuals cannot control every downstream use. Part 1: What Does It Mean to Be a Faithful Steward of Your Data?

A woman carefully holds a glowing sphere containing personal data including photos, emails and contacts, representing faithful stewardship of a digital life

Data has value as property and carries obligations to other people. Faithful stewardship means caring for all information we create, control, or can access, while respecting the people represented in it. Preservation, privacy, thoughtful deletion, and provision for future custodians belong together. Responsibility should grow with actual knowledge, authority, and control.
