The Camera You Chose

Photorealistic AI illustration of a homeowner greeting a parcel carrier, with a passerby and a sedan beyond the doorway.

Choosing a home camera does not amount to consent to every use of its recordings. Other people filmed may have had no choice. Recent Flock disputes and historical privacy cases involving Ring and Wyze underline different risks. Ask who can access recordings, how long they remain and what happens after sharing.

Save the Names, Too

Illustration of an open navy photo album with imaginary family portraits held by photo corners, beside a handwritten notebook and pencil.

Start with a handful of family photographs and record names, places, approximate dates, and who supplied each identification. Keep guesses visibly uncertain. Label protective enclosures rather than the images where possible, and save matching notes beside digital copies. Back up both, check that they open, and agree what may be shared.

Part 2: Below the Waterline

Data stewardship extends beyond saved files to behavioral traces, inferences, metadata, inherited collections and household recordings. What is collected and retained varies by service and settings, and individuals cannot control every downstream use. Begin with one important account: identify its records, access, affected people and future keeper, then make one useful improvement.

Part 1: What Does It Mean to Be a Faithful Steward of Your Data?

A woman carefully holds a glowing sphere containing personal data including photos, emails and contacts, representing faithful stewardship of a digital life

Data has value as property and carries obligations to other people. Faithful stewardship means caring for all information we create, control, or can access, while respecting the people represented in it. Preservation, privacy, thoughtful deletion, and provision for future custodians belong together. Responsibility should grow with actual knowledge, authority, and control.
